Rains stayed late, winter arrives early this year

Nagpur: This year, the winter has come calling earlier than usual, with the coldest day of October recorded earlier than the last nine years. The lowest temperature of the month was 15 degree, recorded on October 25. Usually, going by past data, October's lowest temperature is recorded on the last two days of the month.

This year, on October 31, the minimum temperature was 15.3, which was the second lowest temperature of the month.

As per Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, the night temperature may further go down by two degree during November, while the day temperature is likely to reduce by about four degree.

While the monsoon withdrawal winds had entered Vidarbha on October 15, the monsoon had completely withdrawn from the region on October 17. On the night the monsoon had withdrawn, the minimum temperature of the city had drastically gone down from 23.6 to 19.6 degree.

This month, the city recorded less rainfall than last year, but more rains than 2015 and 2016. Total 41.7mm rainfall has been recorded this month, with most of the rain received between October 22 and 23, due to the cyclone over Bay of Bengal. Last year, there had been 68.3mm rain recorded in the month. Rainfall in 2015 was just 10.8mm and 5.2mm in 2014.

On Tuesday, Nagpur district was the coldest at 15.3 degree followed by Yavatmal at 15.6 degree, Amravati at 16.3, Akola at 16.5, Gondia at 16.8, Wardha at 17.0, Buldhana at 17.2, and Brahmapuri at 17.3. Chandrapur was the hottest at 19.8.


This year, the lowest temperature in the city recorded in October was more than that last year. In 2016, the lowest temperature of the month was 14 degree. This year, this temperature is expected only after the first week of November.


As per the weathermen, haze will continue to prevail in the atmosphere. "Between November 1 and 3, the night temperature of the city is likely to be around 16 degree while the day temperature may be 32 degree. After that, both the day and night temperature are likely to decline with each day," said IMD.


By November 6, the night temperature is likely to dip below 14 degree and the day temperature may go below 30 degree.
