THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 35-year-old allegedly murdered his father following a heated argument in his rented residence at Malayinkeezhu. The accused, Gopakumar, was arrested by Malayinkeezhu police on Monday. Bhaskaran Nair, 63, succumbed to injuries in a hospital on Sunday. The incident took place on Saturday night when Nair and Gopakumar entered into a heated argument over the latter’s drinking habit. The accused hit his father leaving him unconscious.

Gopakumar confessed to the crime and said he did the alleged act under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
The police said Gopakumar is also accused of playing down the incident by not revealing it to anyone. Later, he informed the relatives his father was unwell and had to be admitted to a hospital. However, the relatives felt suspicious with Gopakumar’s behaviour. Some relatives informed the police who took him into custody. Forensic examination revealed he was the culprit.

Gopakumar used to misbehave with women and this always led to a scuffle between the father and son. Nair’s wife Lathakumari was staying in the residence of younger son Pradeep at Mudavanmugal due to the ways of Gopakumar. The accused was produced before the magistrate who remanded him in judicial custody, the police said.

Hundreds of women have lost their jobs in Kerala as traditional coir weaving succumbed to mechanisation and stiff competition from other states backed by better marketing. Despite the high quality of the coir produced in the Chirayinkeezhu and its adjoining vast areas, the sun has set on the industry.
