An undertrial on Monday attacked convicted Lashkar-e-Taiba bomb maker Syed Abdul Karim alias Tunda in the Karnal district court complex where he was brought by the Uttar Pradesh police for hearing, exposing loopholes in the security system.
Interestingly, the accused, Joginder Singh, was booked for attacking Tunda (75) on November 30 last year in the Karnal jail where the two were lodged. Both were brought for the hearing in the same case on Monday.
This is not the first such incident in the Karnal court complex as on May 30 this year three people opened fire in a courtroom injuring two cops and a historysheeter Neeraj Punia.
The police said the incident took place when the Tunda was brought for hearing in the court of additional district and sessions judge Chander Hass from the Ghaziabad jail and Joginder was brought by the Karnal police in the case registered against him Joginder on Tunda’s complaint.
“Soon after the hearing, Joginder managed to escape from police custody and attacked Tunda but cops took him in custody,” Karnal civil line police station in-charge Mohal Lal said.
Officials said Joginder dealt two blows on Tunda’s face but the latter did not sustain injuries and he was sent back to jail after medical examination. The police have booked Joginder under Sections 323, 506, 224, 186 of the Indian Penal Code.
Tunda was awarded life sentence by a Sonepat court earlier this month for his involvement in the 1996 Sonepat bomb blasts in which at least 15 persons were injured.
On November 30 last year, Joginder, a resident of Jind district’s Nagura village, and another inmate Amandeep of Panipat had tried to strangulate him in the security cell of Karnal jail but the jail security guards saved the LeT man.
Joginder and Amandeep were lodged in jail in a murder case. After the incident, Tunda was shifted to a Delhi jail and Joginder and Amandeep were booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC.
