CUTTACK: Former Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Gopabandhu Biswal was sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment (RI) by the Aditional District Judge (ADJ), Cuttack (3) Ananda Narayan Maharana. The ADJ also imposed a fine of `5,000 on Biswal for attempting to kill a 24-year-old woman.
In the verdict, the court has also directed that Biswal will have to undergo two more months of RI if the convict fails to pay the fine amount, informed APP Bijay Kumar Mohanty.

As per the case record, Biswal of Alara in Cuttack’s Narasinghpur block was working as APP in High Court’s First Track Court no 4 when in contact with the girl of Sorapalli in Sambalpur. She was staying in Cuttack’s Roxy Lane.

Alluring her with marriage, the 40-year-old man took her to Dhabaleswar temple in March 2012, put vermilion on her head and then both started living like a couple following which she conceived. Biswal forcefully aborted her pregnancy in a private nursing home at Kathagada Sahi on April 11. Later he made two attempts to kill her. After being saved narrowly, she filed an FIR at Mahila police station which registered a case.

Hundreds of women have lost their jobs in Kerala as traditional coir weaving succumbed to mechanisation and stiff competition from other states backed by better marketing. Despite the high quality of the coir produced in the Chirayinkeezhu and its adjoining vast areas, the sun has set on the industry.
