Poor maintenance of toilets draws flak

Several Petrol Bunks and hotels in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation have agreed to open their toilets for public convenience.

Disclosing this in the Legislative Council, Municipal Administration Minister K.T. Rama Rao said 295 Petrol Bunk operators agreed to provide toilets for public use and 195 bunks had been letting public use their toilets. Under Swach Sarvekshan, toilets in petrol bunks were being constructed even in other towns, he said.

The issue was raised by TRS members Palla Rajeswar Reddy and M.S. Prabhakar during the Question Hour.

Mr. Rama Rao said that after the GHMC officials counselled the Petrol Bunk operators that they would have to provide public toilets under the building rules and regulations, majority of them opened the facility. A total of 451 public toilets were in use, he said.

The GHMC itself provided 400 toilets and 390 hotels gave consent to let public use their toilets and some came forward to provide 15 exclusive toilets for women. They requested other corporates too to contribute to pubic toilets under the CSR activity.

Member Prabhakar pointed out that the upkeep and maintenance of public toilets was poor in many areas and it would serve no purpose if toilets were constructed without provision of water and maintenance.

Leader of Opposition Md. Ali Shabbir said there were no toilets in petrol bunks along the highways and toilets even in Haritha Hotels were in bad condition.
