Four arms smugglers arrested in Azamgarh district

VARANASI: In a major breakthrough the police succeeded in arresting four members of a gang of arms smugglers in Azamgarh district on Tuesday. The police recovered arms and ammunitions in large numbers.

Three other members of the gang including two gram pradhans and a school teacher were absconding. The arms were smuggled to create disturbance in local boy elections.

According to reports, acting on a tip off the police nabbed four persons in Sarai Mir area and recovered 15 pistols, a revolver and cartridges from them. The arrested persons were identified as Tej Pratap Rai, Santosh Yadav, Rajesh Mishra, all from Jiyanpur area of Azamgarh, and Mata Prasad Verma of Chandauli district.

Azamgarh SP Ajay Kumar Sahni said that during interrogation they confided that the arms were smuggled from Munger (Bihar) to create disturbance during local body elections. Three persons including two gram pradhans Lahar Yadav of Gambhirpur and Lalu Yadav of Bardah, and a school teacher Ramchandra Saroj are absconding. The police had launch a manhunt to nab the absconding persons.
