GURUGRAM: A week after FIRs were registered against 50 Palam Vihar residents for protesting against pollution caused by repair work on a neighbourhood road that was abandoned midway, the residents will have to appear in Gurgaon court on Wednesday to surrender and apply for bail plea.

The residents have claimed cops had come over to their society a few times over the past week, seeking information against those booked, and said they now they fear arrests. They had approached state PWD minister Rao Narbir Singh last week, asking him to ensure the FIRs are withdrawn. However, with no discernable action on this front a week later, the residents said they feel let down.

"We approached the minister's office twice asking for the FIRs to be withdrawn. We were assured that would happen. However, cops visited Bestech Park View Residency last night, which got us thinking they might be planning arrests," said Yashesh Yadav , one of the residents booked for the protest.

He added on Wednesday, they will first approach the minister once again, seeking his intervention, and follow it up by approaching Gurgaon district court to surrender and apply for bail. Residents further said they had taken all required permissions to hold the protest.

"The was no reason for police to file FIRs against residents, who protesting peacefully for a good cause. We're all worried now, especially the single women, and hence we've decided to surrender and apply for bail," said Vikas Kumat, a resident of the society who was also part of the protest.

FIRs were registered under sections 147 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public function), 283 (danger or obstruction in public way of navigation) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of IPC at Palam Vihar police station.

Palam Vihar SHO Vikram Nehra though said, "We're still investigating the matter and have not made any arrests yet."
