CHENNAI-HYDERABAD:The Chennai police on Monday arrested a trainee IPS officer from Tirunelveli after Intelligence Bureau officers caught him cheating in the Union Public Service Commission (Main) Examination at a test center here on Monday .

Investigators said Safeer Karim (in pic), an assistant superintendent of police on probation in Nanguneri subdivision of Tirunelveli, smuggled a cellphone and Bluetoothenabled earpieces into the examination hall in Presidency Girls Higher Secondary School For Girls, Egmore. "His wife, Joicy Joy , dictated the answers to him from Hyderabad," an investigating officer said.

The Hyderabad police arrested Joicy Joy from a coaching centre, `La Excellence IAS -The Institute for Civil Services' on Ashok Nagar X Roads in Hyderabad."Karim wanted to join the IAS, so he took the UPSC exams one more time, two years after he successfully cleared the entrance tests and chose to be an IPS officer."

Karim, from Aluva in Kerala who ranked 112 in his second attempt at the civil service examinations in 2015 after falling short in the interview round the previous year, was an electronics engineering graduate and a course director at Karim's IAS, an institute that trains UPSC candidates and has branches in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

A police officer said the IB, suspecting that Karim had cheated in the first of five tests in the civil service examinations on Saturday , had put him under surveillance. They also monitored his wife.

Four IB sleuths followed him to the examination hall on Monday . When Karim reached the hall, he successfully tricked a couple of policemen who were frisking candidates at the entry. "Karim handed over his a wallet and a cellphone from his trouser pockets, apologizing for forgetting to leave the handset in his car," the officer said. "But he had hidden another phone and earphones in his socks." The examination started at 9am.

Twenty minutes later, IB sleuths entered hall and seized a cellphone Karim had concealed under his seat and earpieces he was using to cheat.Hyderabad Task Force sleuths found Karim's wife Joicy Joy sitting in a room at the coaching centre along with some other staff and reading out answers to her husband over bluetooth phone.

Police took Joicy Joy and the direc tor of the La Excellence IAS academy P Rambabu into custody .

"The photo of question paper was clicked with the camera in the shirt button and automatically sent via gmail to his wife Joicy . The other team in Hyderabad downloaded question paper and read out answers to Karim over the phone," said a police officer.

Rambabu and Karim have been friends while they were undertaking civils coaching in Delhi at Vajiram and Ravi academy few years ago. Later, Karim opened his own IAS training academy Karim's La Excellence in Kochi and Tiruvanthapuram and cracked UPSC to become IPS officer in 2015. Karim fell in love with Joicy Joy who was teaching Economics at the academy and married her in 2016. After Karim launched the academy , Rambabu followed him and started a coaching centre in Hyderabad. "Rambabu, Karim and Joicy used to teach at each other's coaching centres," said a Hyderabad police official.

Police came to know that Karim was appearing for the UPSC exam with an aim to get selected from his home cadre (Kerala) IAS or IPS. Intelligence Bureau sleuths who are landing in Hyderabad along with Chennai police will grill Joicy, Rambabu and others to know about the details of the scam .

According to the officer, Karim admitted to wrongdoing. The IB officers handed him over to the Egmore police, who booked him under sections 420 (cheating and dishonesty) and120b (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and section 66 of the IT Act and took him into custody .

Friends told investigators that after Karim met with an accident recently and failed police fitness tests, he believed he was left with no option but to opt for IAS. They also said that Karim had topped the CAT exam.
