Nagpur: Being constructed for the last 34 years, Vidarbha's biggest irrigation reservoir — Gosikhurd Project — is likely to achieve total water storage capacity of 1,146 million meter cube (MMC) by October 2018. The target is to increase water storage capacity from existing 620 MMC to 940 MMC by December this year.
Chief engineer of Gosikhurd project Arun Kamble and superintending engineer JM Sheikh in a press release said target is to complete the entire project by June 2019.
The press release said central water commission had released funds of Rs750 crore for the project through NABARD. "Tendering process of works worth Rs421 crore has been completed. These works will increase irrigation potential by 30,600 hectare," the release said.
Irrigation potential of the project is 62,263 hectare as of now. Irrigation from Tekepar, Ambhora, Mokhaburdi and Nerla mini irrigation schemes has been commenced. Time bound plan has been prepared to achieve total irrigation potential capacity of 2,50,800 hectare in 2019-20. The project will be beneficial for three districts — Nagpur, Gadchiroli and Bhandara — after completion.
Approved in 1983, the project was to complete in 1987. The project's original approved cost was 372.22 crore and gone up by a whopping Rs18,494.57 crore.
