She condemns police ‘high-handedness’ against agitators

Lakshmi Parvathi, general secretary of YSRCP, joined the chorus of women activists from various organisations and political parties in taking on the Telugu Desam government for increasing attacks on women, particularly those voicing their concern over several issues pertaining to the safety of women, here on Tuesday.

Ms. Lakshmi Parvathi and her party members assembled at the Mahatma Gandhi statue opposite GVMC administrative building and raised slogans against the government. She began her protest after garlanding the statue of Gandhi.

Talking to the reporters after the protest, she said attacks on women increased after the TDP coming to power three years ago. “The ruling party leaders are encouraging the programmes which are against our culture,” she alleged.

Roundtable

“When women are protesting against such programmes, their agitation is being suppressed and the police are behaving in a high-handed manner. We strongly condemn the police action,” Ms. Lakshmi Parvathi said.

At the roundtable where women from various organisations and members of political parties participated here on Tuesday, a joint action committee was formed to take up the agitation against the ‘Miss Vizag’ contest. “We will fight and never allow beauty contests in the city,” said AIDWA State president B. Prabhavathi and POW president M. Lakshmi.

They feared that the police harassment would continue against them.

Other activists said news about police high-handedness’ in the city spread all over and many organisations extended their support to the agitation.
