NEW DELHI: BJP in Gujarat will easily manage a victory because of the “deep emotional connect” Gujaratis have with PM Narendra Modi as he was the CM “who made Gujaratis proud and responsible, and gave the poor and middle class a reason to live with dignity”, education and revenue minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama told ET.

“We will win 150 plus seats. Narendrabhai’s popularity has increased even more after he became the PM. Congress understands what Narendra Modi means to Gujaratis but will never openly admit it,” the minister said. One of the long-time associates of Modi, Chudasama said caste has never mattered in Gujarat and will not this time too. “Congress in Gujarat is synonymous with ‘garib’ but Narendrabhai came and changed everything, he gave the poor and middle class dignity and facilities to live. Today every corner of Gujarat has something that Narendrabhai brought in during his time. The happiness quotient of Gujarat increased during the years Narendrabhai was the CM,” he said.

“Gujaratis have a deep emotional connect with Narendrabhai because he improved their lives as CM. Some divisive forces know this but still they are trying to making news by promising impossible things which courts have already denied,” he said, without referring to the reservation promises made by youth leaders Alpesh Thakore and Hardik Patel.

Chudasama said Modi taught Gujaratis to take pride in their lives and be responsible for their fellow beings. “One of the first things he did was to ensure no one died of a road accident in Gujarat. He urged people to be more sympathetic, especially doctors and policemen, brought in 108 ambulances. Enrolment in government became 99% from 75%.”

He said traders facing transition problems with GST will only have to remember how business was difficult during the Congress rule when there was “no electricity after 5 pm”. Congress is putting together a consolidated team of anti-BJP forces. It has claimed steps such as demonetisation and GST have destroyed businesses in trade-rich Gujarat.

“Productivity and revenues of small-time shopkeepers and businessmen doubled after the state got uninterrupted electricity. Big hotels in cities in India use generators but even our smallest of villages have uninterrupted power supply. It was because of this that weddings in April became more peaceful,” he said.

“Because of Narendrabhai, poor people who ran cycle repair centres now have their own shops selling cycles. Autorickshaw drivers have bought taxis. Narendrabhai never allowed middlemen.”

“Narendrabhai has never discriminated among Gujaratis, be it Ashok or Akbar, everyone is the same in his eyes and people of the state know that. He may not be directly ruling the state now, but every Gujarati knows what he has done for them.”
