PANAJI: Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman arrived at INS Hansa naval airbase at Dabolim on Tuesday ahead of the Goa Maritime Conclave - 2017 which she will inaugurate on Wednesday morning. Sitharaman flew in from Mumbai and will spend a day in Goa before returning to Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, sources said.
Sitharaman will inaugurate the first ever Goa Maritime Conclave which is being organized by the Naval War College at INS Mandovi Verem.
"The defence minister landed at Goa airport at 8.45pm. She will fly by helicopter to INS Mandovi for the inaugural function where she will speak and meet senior naval officers," a naval official said.
The conclave will be attended by chiefs of the navies and heads of maritime security agencies of 10 countries including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Maldives, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The conclave is aimed at establishing academic excellence, sharing of ideas and finding collective solutions to maritime issues of interest in the Indian Ocean Region.
Sitharaman was in Mumbai where she promised the Maharastra government that the Indian Army would assist in constructing a new Foot over bridge at Elphinstone railway station.
