Gurgaon: In reply to an RTI, data released by the department of excise and taxation shows 13,655 litres of liquor was confiscated between April 2016 and October 2017 in the city and 145 people were caught in the process.

5796 litres of the total quantity of liquor confiscated was country made, another 5769 litres was Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) and the rest 2020 litres was beer. Liquor is confiscated if a vendor is caught selling or holding liquor without a valid license. The data was revealed in response to an RTI filed by Aseem Takyar.

According to the sources, the authorised seller of IMFL, several restaurants and liquor vendors are getting illicit liquor from nearby states to avoid paying the value-added tax (VAT). "City restaurants are authorised to buy imported liquor from wine wholesalers Lakeforest only, that was awarded a 62 crore bid earlier this year," said an excise official.

In the year 2015-16, the total quantity of liquor confiscated was 20,333 litres. Excise officials credit this substantial decrease in the amount of liquor confiscated to better vigilance.

"There could be several reasons including better vigilance. In some cases it depends on the size of consignment as one big consignment can change the total number," said a senior excise and taxation official from Gurgaon.
