PUNE : Alert residents of Hadapsar intercepted a man minutes after he snatched the gold chain of a 29-year-old woman at Kalepadal around 6.45pm on Sunday.

Homemaker Sangita Gajendra Khote (29) of Kalepadal and her sister in-law Mandakini Ingle (65) were on their way home after purchasing vegetables when the suspect, Navnath Baban Khaire (43), struck. He came walking from the rear and snatched the chain of Khote, worth Rs50,000.

Pratik Badade, Shrikant Katamani and two other residents of the area intercepted Khaire after chasing him for more than 100 metres when the woman raised an alarm. Khaire was handed over to the Hadapsar police later.

Sub-inspector Somnath Shendge of the Hadapsar police said, "It was dark when the two women were on their way home. Khaire spotted one of the women wearing a gold chain. He came from the rear and snatched the gold chain of Khote near the Raut College corner at Kalepadal. He fled towards the railway line compound. The residents could intercept him because he could not scale the compound wall."

Shendge said, "The suspect was heavily drunk when he was taken into custody. We have recovered the chain from him. Based on the complaint lodged by the woman late on Sunday night, we have charged Khaire with committing offence under Section 392 (robbery) of IPC."

During interrogation, Khaire confessed to have committed the crime for repaying his debts. He has criminal antecedents. He told the police that he was detained in a body offence case when he was a minor.
