NEW DELHI: The 1984 batch IPS officer, Yogesh Chander Modi, who took over the charge of Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday said that national interest is top priority for him while dealing with the anti-terror cases. Evidence-based investigations will be conducted in all such cases, he said.

The Assam-Meghalaya cadre officer has succeeded Sharad Kumar, during whose tenure several important cases including Bodhgaya Temple blast, explosions during the Patna rally of the then BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Pathankot airbase attack, ISIS operatives, Jammu and Kashmir terror- funding case and alleged Hindu terror cases were successfully probed.

Interacting with media on his first day at office, Modi said, "We (India) have been affected with terrorism for a long time now. In last eight years, NIA has probed successfully many cases and shown results. From its inception till now, NIA's growth has been exceptional and its credibility has gone up".

"The conviction rate of NIA is almost 95 percent, which I can say for sure cannot be matched by any agencies around the world," said Modi.

Asserting that NIA's job is that of a team-work, Modi said, "An individual cannot do anything. It is the team which brings the results and I can tell you that NIA has the best team of investigators in the country".

Modi also stated that NIA is an independent agency and works within the parameters of law.

The officer, who was earlier posted as Additional Director CBI, also lauded four Inspector Generals (IGs) handling most of the investigations in NIA - Alok Mittal, G P Singh, Anil Shukla and Mukesh Singh.

When asked about whether NIA will question senior Hurriyat leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani in the J&K terror funding probe, Modi said, "We will proceed according the evidence (in front of us)".

He also told TOI that "a chargesheet in J&K terror funding probe will be filed in time".

On the sidelines of media interaction, NIA officers said that they have examined nine cases out of 89 in Kerala Lover-Jehad and alleged conversions matter. When asked why Hadiya's statement hasn't been recorded, NIA sources said that they will record it soon and that they are already in touch with her father.

"In our status report in Love-Jihad cases, we have not given any value judgement in our status report to the SC. We have only stated that there seems to be pattern in conversions," said an officer on condition of anonymity.
