NOIDA: A day after TOI, quoting Noida traffic police, reported that nearly 250 of the 300 parking spots in Noida are illegal, district magistrate B N Singh directed city police to take action against the mafia running the illegal business.

Later in the day, 14 people were arrested for collecting parking fees from commuters in unauthorised spots. The drive was held in Sector 16A and Sector 58. It started at 12 noon and continued till 7.30pm

From the Film City area, as many as nine persons were arrested for charging Rs 20 from car owners for parking in areas which were not authorised as parking spots by Noida Authority.

Led by inspector Layak Singh, traffic personnel could be seen taking rounds in the Film City area in an interceptor vehicle mounted with a camera.

"Nine persons have been arrested from our area. An FIR has been lodged against each of them under Section 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery) and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) of IPC and Section 2/3 of the Public Property Damage Act," station house officer (SHO), Sector 20, Anil Shahi said.

Similarly, five persons were arrested from Sector 62 under Sector 58 police station area.

"A drive was carried out in areas A7, A26, A44 and A45 in Sector 62. An FIR was lodged against offenders under various sections of IPC and Section 2/3 of the Public Property Damage Act," said Anil Pratap Singh, SHO, Sector 58 police station.

A case will be lodged against each of them under the Uttar Pradesh Control Of Goondas Act, 1970 too, he said.

Earlier, in letters sent to superintendent of police (city) A K Singh and superintendent of police (traffic) Anil Jha, the DM had asked them to lodge FIRs under relevant sections of IPC against those running parking spots in non-designated zones. He had also asked the officers to prosecute the offenders under Gangster's Act and Gooda Act, if necessary.

Speaking to TOI, the DM said his instructions to the police were on the lines of the directives issued by chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

"The CM had on October 29 expressed his displeasure at the deplorable state of traffic in Noida including the parking situation," he said.

"He had directed that the city be freed of traffic problems after adopting stringent measures in a time-bound manner," he added.

"The parking offenders will also be charged under Uttar Pradesh Control of Goondas Act, 1970 and Gangsters & Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act 1986," he said.

"I have asked that a weekly review of the parking situation be done by the committee headed by Noida Authority chairman, which has been in place to deal with traffic related issues. Our next meeting is scheduled on November 8," he said.

TOI had on Monday reported that while Noida Authority claimed only 75 illegal parking lots were operating in the city, the traffic police maintained that there were nearly 300 spots from where parking charges were collected and 250 of these were illegal.
