NEW DELHI: In an effort to facilitate more businesses and taxpayers, the government on Monday extended the last date for filing the purchase return under the new Goods and Services Tax (GSTR-2) and GSTR-3 (matching of GSTR-1 and GSTR-2) for the month of July.

The Ministry of Finance in a notification said that the deadline for filing July's GSTR-2 has been extended to November 30. And, the last date for filing of GSTR-3 for the month of July has also been extended to December 11, it added. However, the GSTR-1 (sales return) for the same month was filed till October 10.

Welcoming the move, MS Mani, partner, Deloitte India said, "The extension of the timelines to file both GSTR-2 and GSTR-3 by one more month could enable a significant improvement in the compliance behavior of taxpayers as they now have more time to file match input tax credits, take remedial action for mismatches and enable accurate filing of final returns for the month of July."

He added that the "challenges faced by some of the taxpayers in dealing with mismatches in GSTR 2 etc. would hopefully get resolved in November and hence the decision to extend the timelines for filing returns by one month more is extremely welcome as more taxpayers would be able to file returns in the extended timeline."

The ministerial panel chaired by Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi on Saturday flagged issues faced by taxpayers in filing GSTR-2 and asked Infosys Ltd and GST Network (GSTN) to streamline the system. He said, "The IT services major (Infosys) told us that it would expand its 100-member team, which runs the GSTN, to fix the bugs or technical glitches in it."

The software major has already fixed 18 of the 27 glitches and made them operational, though more bugs were cropping up due to changes the GST Council makes after it meets every time to smoothen the new tax regime.

So far, nearly 12 lakh businesses have filed GSTR-2 returns.
