Panaji: Awards should be given to literary texts based on their merit, said minister for art and culture, Govind Gaude speaking about the Goa state literary awards that were scrapped owing to the issue surrounding 'Sudirsukt' an anthology of poems penned by former MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh.

"The awards should be given totally based on the merit of the books. A new committee will be appointed to decide on how to go about the process," he said.

TOI had earlier reported that the state government took a decision to declare the Goa Konkani Academy (GKA) literary awards as null and void. Speaking on the book, Gaude who has succeeded the former MLA as chairman of Kala Academy said, "Vishnu Wagh is currently bedridden. Filing an FIR against him while he is no position to defend himself was not okay. Law will take its own course in the Sudirsukt matter."
