Single agency to build roads across Haryana

GURUGRAM: In an attempt to streamline road construction in the city, the state government will have a single agency responsible for road infrastructure development in the district. The idea is to ensure multiplicity of authorities and confusion over jurisdiction does not delay or prevent road construction work, said PWD minister Rao Narbir Singh, while addressing a public meeting here on Sunday.
Singh further said a meeting was recently convened on this, where officials from five departments, including Huda, MCG, HSIIDC, PWD and the department of agriculture were asked to come up with a scheme for this. Under the new initiative, only one agency will be for responsible road construction and repair work in the district.
"Road repair and construction often faces hurdles over questions of jurisdiction and responsibility. Within the district, while MCG is responsible for some roads, Huda is for others. There are yet other roads which other departments administer," said the minister.
He added the biggest benefit of this policy will be that there will be no confusion over the role of agencies in road construction, which will eventually help reduce delays.
The state government plans to implement the new scheme by this year-end in all 22 districts of Haryana.
District Gurgaon has long suffered from broken roads. In most cases, there is lack of clarity over which agency is responsible for construction and repair of a particular road. Due to multiplicity of authorities, many road projects end up getting delayed.
The minister believes the policy will benefit not just Gurgaon but also other districts. Singh was speaking at a public meeting with residents of Nirvana Country society in Sector 50, where he heard residents' complaints.
Residents spoke of lack of amenities and asked concerned officials to take necessary action. Among other things, he highlighted the state government's efforts in reducing traffic congestion in the city through construction of several underpasses and flyovers.
