AGRA: A man allegedly slit his daughter's throat with a paper cutter after he found her with her boyfriend in her bedroom. He had initially told police that it was a case of suicide until probe revealed that it wasn't.
The girl had come in the way when her father allegedly tried to kill the boyfriend. He didn't approve of the boy since he belonged to a scheduled caste.
Ravindernath Verma, a medical assistant with the Indian postal service, was apprehended late on Sunday night and booked under section 302 of IPC (murder) based on an FIR lodged by an unknown person. His claim about his daughter taking her own life was rubbished by the police when they contacted Shanu Kumar Timori alias Gaurav, the boyfriend of the deceased. Police had found "Gaurav" written in blood beside the body of Shivani Verma, who was 21.
Deputy superintendent of police Uday Raj Singh, circle officer of Sadar, said, "The father was enraged after seeing his daughter with Shanu in her bedroom and tried to murder him. When his daughter intervened, he killed her."
Shivani and Shanu met in Agra College three years ago.
She was a BSc student while he studied in BA. "We wanted to get married but her father wouldn't let us since I belong to a lower caste. Last year, I was arrested after Shivani's father filed a written complaint with the police after we eloped," said Shanu standing in the district hospital. He had suffered injuries in two fingers after Verma tried to kill him.
