ALLAHABAD: At a time when the northern plains of the country is witnessing advent of winters, the authorities of North Central Railways (NCR) too have started taking measures for safety in train operations in the oncoming winter season. From proper functioning of modified automatic signalling gears, availability of retro-reflective cross marks on the ends of SLRs (last vehicle of train), and review of rail-fracture prone locations etc are several of the steps that the railways would be taking in the next fortnight to confront winters.
In a meeting, presided by the GM NCR M C Chauhan and attended by DRM's of all the three division of the zone (Allahabad, Jhansi and Agra), discussion of safety related incidents in other zones in the past and learning lessons from the same was high on agenda. The GM said that information about all asset failures should be given to the branch officers concerned immediately by the control. He also said that all efforts should be made to make the best possible utilization of the time provided in maintenance blocks so as to improve the productivity.
An intensive drive has been launched in this respect which will continue for the next 15 days in the month of November. In this drive provision of properly painted Visibility Test Objects (VTOs), provision of 'sigma boards' in all divisions, special focus on 'CMS crossings', carrying out 'de-stressing' of long welded rails by taking proper 'de-stressing blocks', and other measures to be taken for ensuring train safety in winter season, especially foggy weather will be ensured.
The GM advised that cold weather patrolling should be started immediately in vulnerable sections. Apart from the above, precautions to be taken in order to prevent rolling down of stabled trains, ensuring availability of 'gate mitras' on unmanned level crossing gates (UMLC), closure of UMLCs in all the three divisions of NCR, ensuring 'zero missing fittings' on tracks, oiling and greasing of fish plated joints, identification of corroded, worn-out and wheel-burnt rails and their replacement, and prevention of weld failures by proper USFD testing& ensuring presence of proper fittings and packing at weld locations, were the other important issues discussed in the meeting.
