Breast cancer awareness programme organised in Mumbai

A breast cancer awareness programme was conducted by Jaslok Hospital on Monday, where a self examination training was provided to 50 woman employees of the BMC.

The programme, which was organised by White Marque Solutions, was held at D Ward BMC office in Grant Road.
Dr Reetu Jain, medical oncologist from Jaslok Hospital, who educated woman employees about breast cancer, said: “Women are scared to go to the doctor for a checkup. Most symptoms of breast cancer don’t cause any pain. When they feel something wrong they ignore the earlier signs and wait longer to go for a checkup.”

In India, around 11.1 per cent women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Most of the cases are diagnosed either in the third or fourth stage. The survival chances for cancer in India is about 75 to 80 per cent. The month of October is observed as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A BMC employee said: “This is the first time that an awareness programme was conducted for us. We received a lot of information about breast cancer, preventive measures and self examination. I will surely pass on this information to my family members and friends.”
