Winners of children’s painting contest honoured

3,222 contributions were received from 85 schools

As many as 20 children were felicitated on Sunday for winning prizes in the junior and senior categories of a painting competition for school students here.

It was organised jointly by The Hindu and Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL) to mark the Vigilance Awareness Week (October 30 to November 4). Judges Lavanya and Meena said they looked for creativity, colours used and the contestants’ grasp of the concept: ‘My vision - corruption free India’.

NLC’s Chief Vigilance Officer T. Venkata Subramanian, who distributed the prizes at a function organised at the newspaper’s corporate office here, said the public sector unit was engaging with schools in and around Neyveli regularly. “The aim is to promote values,” he said, adding that the company had partnered with The Hindu as the company “stands for honesty, integrity and [is] old fashioned.”

The competition was held in nine regions in the State and three winners each in junior and senior categories were selected from each region. From among these winners two of the best paintings would be selected, he said.

The Hindu English’s vice president Shankar V Subramanian and chief human resources officer Baburaj V. Nair, said the newspaper as a brand fulfilled its social responsibility by collaborating with groups that build values in children.

From 85 schools, 3,222 contributions were received. The prize winners are: S. Pranav, class 10A, Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Chetpet; Vinitha Lakshmanan, 8B, Velammal Main, Mogappair; Shuddhi Gowri, G, 10C, Good Shepherd MHSS in the senior category; and Abijeet Kiran S, 6A, Kola Perumal Chetty Vaishnav Sr Sec School, S. Nakshatra, 4, SBIOA International School, Mambakkam; and R. Iniyaval, 6A, Maharishi Vidya Mandir.
