Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Guru Nanak was not only the first guru of the Sikhs but also a guru to the entire world and urged people to follow his ideals and teachings.

Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, undertook a 28,000-km journey on foot to spread the message of true humanity, Modi said in his monthly radio broadcast 'Mann Ki Baat'. Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated on November 4.

"Come 2019, we are going to celebrate the 550th Prakash Varsh of Guru Nanak Devji. Come, let us try and advance on the path of his ideals and teachings.

"He envisioned the welfare of all humanity and considered all castes to be equal. He stressed on female empowerment and respect for women."

The Prime Minister said: "He ran a 'Langar' which sowed the seeds of the spirit of service amongst fellow beings. Partaking of 'Langar' together created a feeling of unity and oneness in people."
