Making his party’s stance clear on the ongoing controversy over the powers of the office of Advocate General, CPI State secretary Kanam Rajendran has made it clear that his party will not accept any move from any quarters that is not bound by constitutional provisions.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the Janajagratha Yatra led by him on Sunday, Mr. Rajendran said the powers of the office of the Advocate General (AG) had been clearly delineated in the Constitution. Moreover, a 1994 verdict of the Supreme Court had clarified that the relationship between the office of the AG and the concerned government was akin to that between the advocate and client, he said.
While the office of the AG was a constitutional office, the government would look into the constitutional issues concerning that office, he said. While making his party’s position in the current controversy, Mr. Rajendran said he did not want to create a controversy over it.
Mr. Rajendran’s statement comes in the wake of the reported retort from AG C.P. Sudhakara Prasad to Minister for Revenue E. Chandrasekharan for his letter on the issue relating to the alleged encroachment of lake by Transport Minister Thomas Chandy.
In his letter the Revenue Minister had sought the appointment of Additional Advocate General Renjith Thampan to appear on behalf of the government.
Mr. Rajendran said the stance taken by President Ram Nath Kovind regarding the achievments of Kerala was a befitting reply to the BJP and its leaders who had disparaged the State during the march taken out by BJP State president Kummanam Rajendran.
In fact, the President’s stance on Tippu Sulthan also went against the BJP’s stance, he said.
The CPI leader came down on Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, who according to him, was training his gun against the LDF. At a time when all secular democratic forces were trying to join hands against the BJP, the attempt to weaken the Left should be viewed with suspicion, he said.
