Accused of killing his wife; initially blamed moneylenders

A restaurateur who allegedly shot dead his wife in the car while their two-year-old son slept on her lap was on Friday sent to three-day police custody by a Delhi court.

A magisterial court in Rohini granted the Delhi Police custody of 35-year-old Pankaj Mehra till October 30, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-west) Milind Dumbere said.

False story

Mr. Mehra allegedly shot dead 34-year-old Priya Mehra near Rohini jail on Wednesday while returning from Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, the police said.

He allegedly tried to mislead the police by claiming that his wife had been shot dead by moneylenders. According to the police, Mr. Mehra confessed to the murder when confronted with evidence against him.

The police said Mr. Mehra had initally claimed that two men had intercepted his car near Rohini jail and that one of them broke the window and got into a scuffle with him while brandishing a pistol.

The accused had alleged that two rounds fired during the scuffle hit his wife. He claimed to have escaped the spot before the accused could attack him.

Mr. Mehra then took his wife to a private hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

However, CCTV footage from the area revealed the presence of just one car — Mr. Mehra’s — on the road at the time of the incident.
