Central board chief visits E. Godavari

Wondering why the Andhra Pradesh government failed to constitute a minimum wages board for the benefit of contract employees working in the State government organisations, chairman of the Central Minimum Wages Board Avula Govardhan on Friday highlighted the need for appointing the body at the earliest.

Speaking to reporters at the end of his two-day district tour here, he expressed dissatisfaction over the non-implementation of the revised wages in a good number of Central government organisations, including the Railways and ports.

“The Narendra Modi-led Central government has issued orders increasing the wages of contract workers by 42%, besides appointing me as chairman of the board to ensure the implementation of the revised wages. The ground reality, however, is contrary to the idea of the government, as most of the organisations failed to implement the revised wages,” he said.

Referring to his visit to the railway stations and the port here, Mr. Govardhan said that the contractor workers were waiting for the revised wages, while the officials concerned were citing lame excuses for non-implementation of the orders. “I am bringing my observations to the notice of the Collector and the Central government,” he said.
