THANE: A 32-year-old woman from Amravati and her two daughters, aged 8 and 11, were killed after being knocked down by a fast local between Kalyan and Thakurli station late Saturday.
The accident took place when Anuradha Kawalkar was on her way from Pune to Nashik along with her husband, Prakash, their daughters and some family friends. They wanted to take a connecting train from Kalyan, but the Pune-Mumbai Intercity Express they had boarded didn't have a halt there.
After crossing Kalyan, when the train halted at a signal before Thakurli, some co-passengers reportedly suggested that they get down there, walk down to the station and board a slow train to Kalyan. The group alighted, but failed to notice a speeding train going towards Kalyan on the adjoining fast tracks.
While the husband and his friend's family managed to duck away in time, Anuradha and her kids were knocked down by the train. "They were hit by some local train around 9pm. The two young girls were killed on the spot, while the woman was injured and rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to injuries on Sunday," said DCP Samadhan Pawar, Government Railway Police. The Dombivli GRP has registered a case of accidental death.
