Looks like the controversy around Vijay’s latest release Mersal has finally died down, giving the producers some time to celebrate the success of the movie. Irrespective of the various controversies, Mersal’s stint at the box office has been incredibly strong with the film holding good in its second week. The film has not only ruled the screens in the state, it is also charming the cash box abroad becoming the latest film to join the $1.5 million club in the United States. According to a report in the international business times, Mersal is the fourth movie to cross the $1.5 million mark and the eleventh film to cross the $1 million mark. Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kabali still holds the top position at the US office. Mersal is also the highest grossing Vijay film in the United States and has already crossed the lifetime earning of Vijay’s last hit Theri.

Meanwhile, the Telugu version of Mersal continues to face issues with censor as the film’s release has been delayed. The censor certificate for the film has not been officially given to the movie yet, causing the delay in its release. While the producers maintain that there is no additional mute or cut in the movie, it is unclear if the delay is due to film’s critical stance of GST. The BJP had earlier slammed the movie for allegedly using ‘incorrect facts’ and portraying the government’s initiatives in bad light. Notably, the Madras High Court squashed the ban on the film recently saying “It is just a film” and that there should be freedom of expression.

The film which is poised to enter the Rs 200 crore club soon, will be aided by its Telugu release if the standstill comes to an end. Mersal has thrashed box office records by earning Rs 170 crore across the world in just a week. Industry trackers have estimated film’s earning in the state to be around Rs 80-90 crore in the first week right behind Rajinikanth’s 2010 blockbuster Enthiran that grossed Rs 110 crore. If the film maintains its stellar run, it might as well beat Enthiran’s mark, a feat only achieved by the blockbuster Baahubali 2: The conclusion.
