BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is set to launch his ambitious plan to provide houses for the poor. Online applications would be invited for distribution of one lakh houses for the poor from November  15.

With the ruling Congress setting an ambitious target of winning more than 20 of the 28 assembly seats in Bengaluru in the forthcoming election, Siddaramaiah himself is keenly monitoring the progress of the project. The below poverty line and homeless families living in the city for more than five years would be eligible to apply.

Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation will build 1 lakh houses which would be multi-storied (ground plus 3 stories), housing complexes which would be constructed on government lands that were recently cleared of encroachment, Siddaramaiah said on Thursday after chairing a meeting to review the project’s progress.

Government has already handed over 431 acres of land to Rajiv Gadhi Housing Corporation. The estimated construction cost of each house will be Rs 5.50 lakh. State government will provide a subsidy up to Rs 3.80 lakh for SC, ST beneficiaries and up to Rs 2.70 lakh for general category BPL families. The beneficiaries would have to bear the remaining cost.

An  initial deposit of Rs 50,000 would be collected with the application from SC, ST beneficiaries and the initial deposit would be Rs 1 lakh for other sections of the society, Siddaramaiah said.
