70th Infantry Day celebrated in Punjab

The Golden Arrow Division of the today celebrated the 70th Infantry Day with traditional solemnity and gaiety here.

Major Gen Rajesh Kundra, SM, General Officer Commanding ( GOC) of the division along with the senior officers and troops paid homage to the martyrs at the Barki War Memorial.


The event was followed by the unit level "Barakhana" for all ranks.

In subsequent battles that the nation witnessed, the Infantry soldiers have always played a major role in defending the sovereignty of the country, the Army officials said.

"The Infantry or 'Queen of Battle' as it is popularly known, has in its legacy, valiant acts of selflessness and courage by the Infantrymen who have made innumerable sacrifices to defend the motherland," said General Kundra.

October 27 is celebrated every year as the Infantry Day as it was on this day in 1947 that an Infantry Company of the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment was airlifted from to to push back tribals from Pakistan who had invaded Jammu and Kashmir with the support of the Pakistan Army.

The Indian troops took on the Pakistani invaders a day after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession acceding Jammu and Kashmir to India.
