GURGAON: MCG will take up waste collection and management in the new sectors of the city under its Integrated Waste Management Plan which is expected to start from December.

The move will likely bring huge relief to residents as there is no agency for waste collection in these sectors yet.

The new sectors don't fall under the corporation and Huda has not taken up the responsibility as well.

According to MCG officials, Huda has not handed over the new sectors to them yet. However, it has been decided that sectors 58 to 115 will be covered under the new waste management plan in which an agency appointed by MCG will take care of waste collection from these sectors.

"There have been multiple requests and complaints from these sectors about waste collection and management. Huda is yet to hand over these sectors to MCG. Hence, initially, we did not take steps for waste pick-up and maintenance of sanitation in these areas. However, under the new plan, the new sectors will also be covered," said a senior MCG official.

MCG has signed a contract with EcoGreen Energy Pvt Ltd for waste collection and waste treatment in these areas. The waste will be segregated at the source into two categories - degradable and non-degradable.

The waste, collected by the agency, will be first taken to waste collection centres and next to waste treatment centres where the degradable waste will be converted into compost and the rest will be used to produce energy.

"Currently, we are holding awareness sessions for residents across all wards. We will also approach residents of the new sectors to educate and make them aware about waste segregation and charges associated with it," said Sunil Tiwari, manager of Ecogreen Pvt Ltd.

Currently, in the absence of a proper waste management system in sectors 58 to 115, waste from households often ends up in empty plots. Garbage burning is also often reported from these areas and this adds to the pollution levels in the city. TOI had reported on Friday that a huge fire broke out near Sohna Road as a result of garbage burning.
