Jaipur: The Andhra Pradesh police gunned down a suspected robber near Sanchore in Jalore district on Friday evening. Bhim Singh (31), wanted in a case in Andhra Pradesh, was killed after a high-voltage chase through Sanchore-Raniwara state highway.
Singh ran over a 50-year-old woman, killing her on the spot, before he was shot down by the police. The Rajasthan police claimed they were not aware of the action by the Andhra police until the locals informed them about the exchange of fire on the state highway.
"We were not informed by the Andhra police before they arrived here. We got to know about the incident only when Bhim Singh was gunned down and a 50-year-old woman was killed in the chase," said additional SP (Jalore) Jasaram Bose.
The Jalore police said that one of Singh's associates, Bharat, who sustained bullet injuries, was out of danger.
According to Bose, the Andhra police traced Bhim Singh's location in Jalore on Friday. When they raided his hideout, he fled in his getaway vehicle along with Bharat.
At 3pm, a high-voltage chase began on the state highway that runs from Sanchore to Raniwara in Jalore district. The Andhra police, according to the Rajasthan police, fired a warning shot at Singh's getaway vehicle. He returned fire at the police SUV. Singh was also driving a SUV.
"During the chase, one woman, identified as Shanta Devi Jogi, was killed when Singh's SUV ran over her. The police fired again at Singh and critically wounded him. He eventually succumbed to bullet injuries," said Bose.
Bhim Singh was a native of Bhinmal village in Jalore district. Police said that there were criminal cases registered against him in Jalore too. "The Andhra police had booked him under multiple cases, ranging from possessing illegal firearms to committing robberies," said Bose. The Jalore district police are probing the events leading to Singh's death.
