GURGAON: Around 46 suspected cases of dengue have been reported in the past one week in the city, of which four cases have already been confirmed positive by the health department.

So far this year, 139 cases of dengue have been reported in the city, and 567 suspected cases have been reported.

Similarly, 1,443 dengue cases have been reported across Haryana. There have been no dengue deaths reported in Haryana this year. However, the numbers can be higher as the health department has allegedly underreported the number of dengue cases this year.

The district health officials said they are taking all necessary steps to keep the diseases under control and the drive has been intensified.

"We have conducted fogging in 20,000 houses in Gurgaon. On a daily basis, we on an average cover around 2,000 houses for anti-larvae activity. Moreover, 1,400 people have been issued notices for larvae breeding. Besides this, we have set up a separate ward in the General hospital to treat dengue patients," said Dr S S Saroha, district malaria officer, Gurgaon.

Meanwhile, the doctors said vector-borne infection in off-season can be more serious due to a stronger strain of virus and the immunity is lower due to change in weather.

"It was anticipated that there would be a fall in the number of dengue and chinkunganiya cases post Diwali. But there was a rise. The main reason for such rise in the number is probably the late onset of dengue this year ," said Dr Rajesh Kumar, senior consultant (internal medicine), Paras Hospital, Gurgaon.
