NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the Army on the Infantry Day, which marks the airlifting of the Indian Army's first contingent to Jammu and Kashmir to repulse an attack by the Pakistan Army-backed tribals.

"Greetings to all infantrymen on Infantry Day. We are proud of our infantry's exceptional courage & dedicated service to our nation," Modi tweeted.

"I bow to all infantry martyrs, who devoted their lives to the nation. Their heroic sacrifices will be remembered for generations to come," he added in another tweet.

October 27 is celebrated every year as the Infantry Day as it was on this day in 1947 that an Infantry Company of the First Battalion of the Sikh Regiment was airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar to push back tribals from Pakistan who had invaded Jammu and Kashmir with the support of Pakistan Army.

The Indian troops took on the Pakistani invaders a day after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession acceding Jammu and Kashmir to India.
