DySP suicide: CBI registers FIR against Karnataka minister KJ George, 2 senior cops

The CBI has filed an FIR against Karnataka minister and two senior police officers for allegedly harassing a deputy superintendent of police (DySP) which led to his suicide last year.

Karnataka’s urban planning and development minister K J George, additional director general (intelligence) A M Prasad and inspector general (Lokayukta) Pranab Mohanty have been charged with abetting the suicide of M K Ganapathy, who was found hanging in a lodge in Madikeri in Karnataka under mysterious circumstances on July 7 last year.

The CBI FIR came following a Supreme Court directive on September 5 on the appeal of Ganapathy’s father, M K Kushalapp who had accused the three of harassing his son.

Stressing that the case had “startling facts”, the court had said that a fair investigation by an independent agency was necessary to ascertain even whether it was a suicide or a murder.

However, the Karnataka government had opposed the plea in the apex court, arguing that a thorough probe had been conducted in the case.

But the SC dismissed the state government’s argument and ordered the CBI to probe the case, and also sought a status report within three months.

The CBI then took over the FIR which was registered by the Karnataka police on the complaint of Ganapathy’s son Nehal. Nehal, too, had accused the three of harassing his father.
