40th Annual Chandigarh Sangeet Sammelan: Music lovers in for 3-day treat from tomorrow

MUSIC lovers can look forward to the three-day 40th Annual Chandigarh Sangeet Sammelan, by the Indian National Theatre, in collaboration with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Starting October 27, the festival will see some outstanding young classical singers from different parts of the country perform at the festival. On the first day, Mandar Gadgil and Manjiri Alegaonkar will take centre-stage. Gadgil is a disciple of Pt. Vijay Koparkar and has been associated with music since the past 12 years. Manjiri Alegaonkar took earlier training in music from her father Mohan Rao Karvey. On the second day of the Sammelan renowned singers Saylee Talwarkar, Dr Alankar Singh and Sanhita Nandi will perform for the audience.

Talwarkar has a keen interest in semi-classical forms such as thumri, dadra, bhajan and has performed for various music festivals. Dr Alankar Singh is an assistant professor of vocal music at the Music Department in Punjabi University, Patiala and is the recipient of the Ustad Bismillah Khan Award by the Sangeet Natak Akademi for Gurbani kirtan. Nand is a prominent Hindustani classical singer of the Kirana Gharana and is known for her ornate sargams.

On the concluding day of the sammelen, Paromita Mukherjee will present a violin recital, followed by a performance by Shashwati Mandal, an accomplished singer of the Gwalior style. “The Sammelan is a labour of love, and will be a treat for all those who appreciate and love music,” said Vinita Gupta, Secretary, Indian National Theatre.

The festival, on from October 27 to October 29, will be held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Sector 27, 6 pm onwards.
