India to acquire 200 ships by '22

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Friday said its total fleet strength will go up to 200 ships and 100 aircraft by 2022.

ICG additional director general V S R Murthy said the Coast Guard currently has 130 ships and 62 aircraft. "Seventy ships are under construction in various shipyards. Once it is completed, our fleet will increase to 200 over the next five years," he said.

Murthy was in Chennai to launch the offshore patrol vessel (OPV) built by Larsen and Toubro. Constructed at a cost of Rs 186 crore and christened Vikram, it is the first of the seven OPVs to be built by L&T for the Coast Guard.
