Water level in the Idukki reservoir is above the normal level recorded in the past two years at this time of the year, though it is still below the average water level reported on a normal southwest monsoon season.
The water level on Wednesday was 65.19% of the total reservoir level. It was only 44.28% during the same day last year.
An official at the Dam Monitoring and Research Station, Vazhathoppe, said the cumulative rainfall recorded till October 25 was 2,617 mm, which was 2,268 mm the previous year. In 2015, the cumulative rainfall till October 25 was 2,054 mm.
The water level is rising though at a slow pace with the rainfall subsiding in the past three days. The official said power generation was at a low at the Moolamattom power house. It was 4.4 mu on Wednesday.
Low power generation
The low level of power generation since the start of the southwest monsoon also contributed to the better reservoir level this season.
The minimum water level this year as calculated on June 1 was at a low level, the official said adding that the upward trend was expected till November.
The water level on Wednesday was 2,371.22 ft when compared to 2,348.12 ft on the same day the previous year. The level was 2,361.56 ft in 2015, 2,379.24 ft in 2014, and 2,394.38 ft in 2013.
