Pesticide sprayed in Chembanoda between 1970 and 2002

Kerala State Human Rights Commission acting chairperson P. Mohanadas will on Wednesday visit Chakkittapara, Chembanoda, and Muthukad areas where the residents have reportedly been affected by the spraying of endosulfan.

According to a press release by the commission, there are around 70 endosulfan victims suffering from serious physical and mental deformities at Chembanoda. The pesticide was sprayed in an estate there between 1970 and 2002. As per a complaint lodged with the commission, these people had been denied food and medicines and students had been denied school admissions. It was a violation of a High Court order, they claimed.

‘Ignored’

“Though the problems faced by the village residents are similar to those affected by the pesticide in Kasaragod, we are being ignored,” said the complaint.
