CHENNAI: Actor Rajinikanth and his friends have built a meditation house on the foothills of the Himalayas to celebrate the 100 years of the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS), founded by Paramahansa Yogananda, author of The Autobiography of a Yogi.

For more than a decade now, Rajinikanth has been visiting the Dunagiri area near the Himalayas to meditate in the caves where Mahavatar Babaji, an ancient yogi who is said to have an "eternal body," lived. 'The Autobiography of a Yogi' is about Babaji.

"This ashram or house for meditation is near the caves," said V Vishwanathan, an advocate in Chennai and one among the "friends" of the superstar who contributed towards building the ashram.

"Businessmen Hari VS of Bengaluru, VS Murthy and Sridhar Rao of Delhi and I met Rajinikanth in the caves in 2002. So when the YSS turned 100, we felt that this would be the perfect contribution," he said.

The cost of building the ashram was around Rs 1 crore, he said and added that devotees could stay there free of cost.

The house will be opened to the public in November.
