ANANTAPUR : A student of Sri Sai Residential Junior College committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room using a chunni here on Tuesday.OP Yamuna, who was from Kothacheruvu in the district, ended her life after she was humiliated by representatives of the college management in front of other students over delay in payment of fees.Though the 16-year-old had paid a major portion of the first year college fees of `18,000, she was yet to clear about `3,000 balance.

Before she went to her parents for Deepavali, principal P Sanjiva Prasad told her that she should either come back with the remaining amount or not come at all.Her parents were unable to cough up the amount, so her mother asked her to explain their situation to the principal and seek some more time. As soon as she arrived at the college, the principal asked her why she had returned empty handed.

Yamuna, who felt deeply humiliated by what he said, took the extreme step after her peers went for classes, inspector of police K Saiprasad told TNIE.Despite several attempts, neither the principal nor correspondent Madhuri Rajeswara Rao could be contacted. Meanwhile, student organisations staged a demonstration in front of Sri Sai Residential Junior College demanding that the principal and the correspondent be arrested.

Medico jumps to death
Guntur:
A third-year medical student committed suicide by jumping from the overhead water tank at Chandrababu Naidu Colony in Tenali in the district on Tuesday. Tenali police said the victim B Aneela, who was a student of Guntur Medical College, came to Tenali at about 3 pm, climbed to the top of the tank and from there jumped to her death. She suffered multiple fractures and severe injuries on her head. According to Inspector A Ashok Kumar, the police could establish her identity with the help of her identity card and immediately contacted Guntur Medical College and conveyed the news of her death to college principal Dr G Subba Rao.

Subba Rao told TNIE that Aneela, who was from Kakinada, did not attend classes for the last one year as she was under depression. Subba Rao said that her mother Prabhavathi, who is a gynaecologist at Kakinada, met him and told him that Aneela even underwent treatment for depression and she had shown a lot of improvement in the recent past. She took her to college and left her there on October 23 hoping that she would resume her regular studies at the college.

According to her uncle P Ramakrishna Reddy, Aneela was a topper at school. She also managed to get a good rank to get a seat in Guntur Medical College. After she joined the college, she had one backlog in the first year which probably had acted on her mind and pushed her into a state of depression.
