The spot in Vidyaranyapura where the body was found | JITHENDRA M

BENGALURU: The body of a newborn girl was found in a pile of trash near the busy Vidyaranyapura bus stop on Monday evening. Ants had bitten the body, which was lying unnoticed there for two days until a passerby Shruthi noticed it and shared the photo and location on a social networking site. Negendra M, who works with Civil Defence, saw the post and rushed to the spot. He subsequently alerted Vidyaranyapura police and the body was taken to MS Ramaiah hospital for post-mortem.

A senior police officer said the baby was more than three days old and had been abandoned after its death. Preliminary investigations reveal that those who left the baby there had arrived in a vehicle about two days ago. Injury marks were found on the body which was probably due to the baby being thrown from some distance. Doctors are yet to confirm whether the baby died before or after birth.
“CCTV footages were obtained from the locality to identify the vehicle and to find the people responsible. We are waiting for the post-mortem report to know the exact reason of death. We also questioned some of the staff members of hospitals located in the area,” the officer added.

Speaking to Express, Nagendra M said, “I saw the post on a social networking site around 6.30pm and I reached the spot within an hour. Some people noticed the body and passed by but none bothered to inform the police. I called Vidyaranyapura police who reached the spot immediately and shifted the body. Later, I went to the station and filed a case.” “There were injury marks on hands of the baby which was not covered with any clothes,” he added.

Janardhan, who runs a bakery in the area, said that around 11.30 am on Sunday, a couple of vehicles were parked for some time near the spot where the body was lying. “I think the baby was dead before they threw it. Or else, someone would have heard it crying.”
The spot where the body was found sees heavy movement of people due to the presence of a bus stop and an ATM. The garbage has not been cleared for a week.
