PIL in HC against online admission of poor, disadvantaged kids

Press Trust of India  |  New Delhi

A plea was today moved in the High challenging the city government's order for online admission to entry level classes in private schools for the economically weaker section (EWS) and disadvantaged group (DG) categories.

The petition, filed by an NGO, is likely to come up for hearing on October 27 before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and C Hari Shankar.

The plea by NGO, Justice For All, challenged the government's January 9, 2017 notification for online system of admission under EWS/ DG category, saying it was contrary to the January 7, 2011 notification of the Lieutenant Governor.

It said that the had issued a notification which specified that the manner and time schedule for the admission of EWS/ DG children must not be different from the process followed for the general category kids.

The filed through advocate Khagesh Jha claimed that the government's notification was arbitrary and in violation of the provisions of the Right to Education (RTE) Act and the LG's notification.

It said the government's Directorate of Education (DoE) has failed to ensure admission to thousands of children of EWS and DG category and the online system has multiplied the complications faced by the parents.

The plea has sought quashing of government's notification and a direction to the DoE and all the three municipal corporations to prepare a comprehensive mechanism of online/ offline admission under EWS/DG category in all schools of irrespective of the agency which recognises the schools.
