Gurgaon: The notorious Dingerheri gang rape and robbery case of 2016 is back to haunt Haryana Police, after the authenticity of those arrested now coming under the scanner.

A gang of four, who were arrested around a month ago in connection with another robbery and rape case, are believed to have alconfessed to being responsible for the Dingerheri incident as well, in addition to 40 other crimes.

On the night of August 24, 2016, a 40-year-old farmer and his wife were beaten to death and their two nieces gang-raped by four armed men, who barged into the house in Dingerheri village of Nuh district in Mewat, near the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) expressway.

An SIT, led by former IG (Rewari) was formed, which announced that it had arrested the four accused within days. Soon after, however, there was an uproar that cops had arrested wrong people in haste, and the matter was handed over to CBI. Meanwhile, the four people arrested on August 27, 2016, are still languising in jail.

On January 28 this year, two women were allegedly raped inside a factory in Mandpura, Pataudi, and robbed of valuables by a gang of eight. On September 13, four of the gang members were arrested from Delhi by a team led by inspector Yashwant Singh, who was specially assigned to the Mandpura case, after an eight-month-long effort. Gurgaon police sent the confessional report to CBI recently. In it, gang leader Dharmu alias Dhirender alias Hemant, who is from Bapdaula in Najafgarh, has confessed that he and his three associates were responsible for the Dingerheri incident.

Now, CBI has not only sent their DNA samples for examination, but is also investigating the case, and has sought the accused on production warrant. The hearing is scheduled for October 30 at the CBI court in Panchkula.

"There was a room and a hut in the fields near Dingerheri village. Dharmu and his associates Munna and Jai Bhagwan thrashed the man and his wife sleeping outside with sticks, while his other aide Lambu took their two nieces inside at gunpoint, and thrashed another man who was sleeping there. Finally, after locking other family members inside another room, the four raped the two women, one of whom is a minor," reads the "confession" police have got.

An SIT was formed within days. On August 28, they arrested four youths — Rahul, Karamjeet, Amarjeet and Sandeep — all from Mohammadpur Ahir village, who were putting up close to Dingerheri. While two of them were employed as office helpers at a warehouse, the other two are farm hands.

But when locals protested the arrests, claiming police had arrested wrong people in haste, the case was given to CBI, who kicked off their probe on December 19, 2016.

Dharmu's confession has many people squirming, not the least local police. The victims are also under the scanner, as they too had testified against those accused earlier. "We've forwarded the confessional statement to CBI, who will take all four on production warrant. The hearing is on October 30," a senior Gurgaon cop told TOI.
