Residents say the officials did not take steps to clean drainage

The District Legal Services Authority, Tiruvannamalai, on Monday issued show-cause notice to the Commissioner and health officer of the municipality following complaints that drainage was not maintained.

The authority issued thenotice as to why action should not be taken against the officials for non-maintenance of drainage in the municipality area and not discharging their duties as prescribed in the Tamil Nadu District Municipal Act and Tamil Nadu Public Health Act. Both the officials have been directed to appear before the authority on October 26 along with records pertaining to maintenance of drainage and offer their explanation in person without fail.

The authority had received complaints from two persons – residents of Tiruvannamalai – on October 23 that the officials did not discharge their duties and instead, collected huge sums as fine . The complainants alleged the officials did not take steps to clean drainage in some areas and it was likely to turn into mosquito breeding sources. Following this, G. Mahizhenthi, chairman/Principal District Judge, District Legal Services Authority, Tiruvannamalai, and secretary decided to conduct a spot inspection. They heard the grievances of the public during the inspection. It came to light that the municipal officials “have miserably failed to discharge their duties”. Some obstruction in the channel was preventing flow of drainage.
