The Telangana State unit of the Telugu Desam Party appears to be in no hurry to initiate action against party working president A. Revanth Reddy whose comments on possible alliance, including a possible tie-up with the Congress in the next elections, created a sharp divide among the party rank and file.
The party sought an explanation from Mr. Revanth Reddy about his visits to New Delhi and his reported meetings with Congress leaders. He was also asked to clarify on the statements made by some Congress leaders that he was set to join the Congress.
TDP-TS president L. Ramana said though Mr. Revanth Reddy gave some clarity on his shifting loyalties at a meeting in Kodangal a couple of days ago, that was not enough. “He (Mr. Revanth) should serve legal notices on the Congress leaders who claimed he was switching loyalties as these were belittling Mr. Revanth’s personal prestige as also the party’s image,” he said.
Interestingly, Mr. Ramana said his party was yet to take a political position in relation to parties that could be friendly and those that would be against the TDP-TS in the coming elections. The party had worked with other political parties against the “anti-people policies” of the TRS Government as the leadership had given the freedom to adopt s course of action that would suit the local situation and help in strengthening the party.
On the action proposed against Mr. Revanth Reddy, he said the party’s disciplinary action committee would serve notices on the leaders who were found to violate the party line and it was for them to give a detailed explanation on the charges. The party had taken note of the reports appearing about Mr. Revanth Reddy over the past few days and it was for Mr. Revanth Reddy to give an explanation about his reported meetings with top leaders of the Congress.
“We will take a decision on Mr. Revanth Reddy after discussing the issue at the party’s legislature party meeting slated for October 26. TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu will also be briefed about the developments in the meantime,” he said. Mr. Ramana asserted that the party’s politburo, the highest decision-making body, would decide about the alliances at an appropriate time and it was not proper for party leaders to speak on the issue at the present juncture.
