Minister tells District Magistrates

Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot on Monday ordered District Magistrates to identify gram sabha land in rural areas under their jurisdiction where playgrounds can be developed.

According to the order, the land will be identified in consultation with MLAs, who will also form a committee comprising youth of their areas. The youth will be responsible for maintenance of these playgrounds. The move is aimed at encouraging youth to opt for sports.

Committee of youths

“Gram sabha land shall be identified in each rural village by the District Magistrates concerned where children of the village can play...The land shall not be allotted or transferred in the name of any authority but will continue to be gram sabha land,” Mr. Gahlot said in his order.

Mr. Gahlot, who also holds the charge of transport and law, said an area MLA will form a committee of not more than 21 youth who will be responsible for maintenance of the land.

Earlier this month, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that the Delhi government had drafted a policy under which training, travelling and other expenses of national and international-level sportspersons would be fully borne by the government. Speaking at an event on October 7, Mr. Kejriwal had also said there was no dearth of youths who can earn medals in sports but their efforts were constrained by facilities and governments assistance.
