The boys beat the team from Kerala in the final round

Six students of Katpadi Government Boys Higher Secondary School have won laurels in a national-level futsal tournament held earlier this month.

The boys – all students of Class XII – won the eighth Junior National Futsal Tournament that was organised by the Tamil Nadu Futsal Association at a school in Sholinghur. Teams from 12 States across the country took part in the tournament for under-17, and the boys from the Katpadi school, representing Tamil Nadu, beat the team from Kerala in the final round.

Futsal is a five-a-side soccer. The size of the field, ball and goal post is smaller when compared to regular football. The duration is shorter, and rules and regulations have been modified too. It allows three substitute players, according to M. Jayaseelan, physical education trainer of Katpadi Government Boys HSS.

The team comprised V. Ramajeyam, J. Premkumar, A. Avinash Kumar, G. Sathya, P. Ashwin and R. Rumesh. Collector S. A. Raman congratulated the students for their feat in the presence of the school’s head R. Saraswathi.

In fact, teams from the school also won in the under-12 years’ category in the State-level sub-junior football tournament organised by the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association at Arakkonam, and won the runners-up trophy in the under-17 category, a press release said.
