26 city students make it to Everest Base Camp

HYDERABAD: Students of Jain Group of Institutions achieve a world record, for being the first school ever with the largest contingent to successfully reach the Everest Base Camp on October 18. Twenty six students from Jain Group of Institutions (JGI) of Hyderabad and six adults led by  Jahnavi Sriperumbuduru, India’s youngest professional mountaineer; Dr. Krishna Rao Sriperumbuduru, Director Janjay Adventures and Dr. Chadrashekar DP; CEO, JGI, reached Everest Base Camp and concluded their Everest expedition. Everest Base Camp is either of two base camps on opposite sides of Mount Everest.

The South Base Camp is in Nepal at an altitude of 5,364 metres (17,598 ft) and is a rudimentary campsite on Mount Everest used by mountain climbers during their ascent and descent. Mountaineers typically rest at base camp for several days for acclimatisation to reduce the risks and severity of altitude sickness.
JGI says it is the first school to send the largest contingent for this expedition and which successfully completed the expedition to reach the Everest Base Camp. “This is a World Record as declared and endorsed by Nepal Mountaineering Associations today,” said Dr Krishna Rao Sriperumbuduru, speaking to Express over the phone from Nepal.

The idea was conceptualised by Dr Chandrashekar DP, after meeting Jahnavi four months ago.
The ball started rolling in the month of July by conducting physical fitness test for all students above grade V in all the three branches of JGI schools at Shameerpet, Tadbund and Kondapur. Finally 26 students could sustain the rigorous training given by JanJay adventures for 45 days and then the Trek commenced on October 10 from Lukla to Phakding which is 2,652 m, followed by a trek upto 3,440 m to Namche, there  by Tengboche upto 3,860m and to Dingboche by trekking up to 4,360m and reaching Lobuche at 4,940m and finally to Gorakshep at 5,170, to hike to Everest base Camp at 5364 m, which was completed by October 18.

The best part of this expedition is the contingent which includes a seven year old young boy with other 13 boys and 12 girls to a 50 year old professional coach from JanJay team, who exhibited equal energy and determination till the summit was completed.The largest contingent of school students in the world to accomplish Everest Base Camp Trek 2017 are arriving in Hyderabad on October 23. The Chairman of the Group Dr. Roychandji Chen Raj and the Academic Director have congratulated each and every child who participated and thanked all the Participants’ parents for their continued support and encouragement.
